Phippsburg – The Maine Forest Products Council (MFPC) awarded Scott Reed of ND Paper with the organization’s Outstanding Environmental Management Award at its 65th Annual Meeting in Phippsburg on Monday, September 22, 2025.

The award, presented by MFPC Board Member Scott Beal recognizes a distinguished career, dedicated to protecting Maine’s environment, and individual leadership in advocating for a sustainable forest products industry regulatory framework. An outstanding environmental manager must have integrity, credibility, and honesty within the industry, and perhaps more importantly with those who regulate the industry. Scott has provided significant time and expertise improving the regulatory and legislative framework. He delivers confident leadership whenever needed, both in Rumford and in Augusta. The industry has benefitted immensely from his intellect, his dedication, and his work ethic.

CEO of ND Paper Ken Liu praised Scott’s contribution to ND Paper and the River Valley. “Scott Reed exemplifies the values we strive for at ND Paper—integrity, safety, and respect for the world around us. A lifelong Mainer and second-generation Rumford mill employee, Scott’s passion for the place he works and calls home is clear. His leadership has strengthened ND Paper’s environmental stewardship and benefitted the entire forest products industry. This award is a well-earned recognition of his impact.”

“Over the years, Scott has guided the Mill through the implementation of federal Cluster and Boiler MACT rules, and state air, wastewater, stormwater, solid waste, and RCRA rules, legislation, and programs. He often takes a lead role in managing these important efforts, mentoring and providing guidance along the way” said nominator Jim Brooks of Sappi.

“Selfless is an accurate word to describe his achievements – he does not seek acclaim for all that he does or provides but delivers determined and confident leadership whenever it is needed. For all these reasons and more, Scott is well deserving of the 2025 MPFC Environmental Manager of the Year Award.”
