Today Sappi announced plans to invest $418 million at the Somerset Mill in Skowhegan to convert Paper Machine #2 to produce solid bleached sulfate board and expand production from 240,000 tons to 470,000 tons annually. This announcement comes on the heels of a $400 million expansion announcement at LP Building Solutions Houlton facility just over a week ago.
“Investments in the forest products sector are investments in rural Maine communities,” said Patrick Strauch, Executive Director of the Maine Forest Products Council. “The Forest Products Council applauds Sappi’s continued support of the Somerset Mill, and for planning ahead to remain competitive in current and future markets. This investment will have a tremendous impact on the industry, and the many families who rely on the facility for employment.”
